This special Valentine’s pack contains two bottles of each of these specially selected beers

ABM Christmas Star 2011.

Just before Christmas, we asked for nominations of people deserving of some extra Christmas cheer this year.

Every nomination was worthwhile, with people working hard for charity, or helping out those in need at home, through to simply being a good friend during the year, and it made the selection of just one winner really difficult. But choose we must, and our eventual winner was Kathy Parsons.

Kathy chose to nominate her son and daughter-in-law, Mark & Helen. Helen’s operation meant that 2011 hadn’t been a great year for them both, and that Helen’s endometriosis may mean some trying times ahead.

We organised a surprise package of ale to be delivered to Mark & Helen just in time for Christmas, and Kathy emailed to let us know “You can imagine the shock, surprise and delight!”, so it was a gift very well received!

We’ve all sorts of other competitions lined up for 2012, so stay tuned, it could still be you!

Despite this however, the people of the UK shine through, volunteering for charities, working hard to support their families well, or maybe just being there for a friend in need.

We’d like to hear your stories about people who’ve done something this year that deserves a special treat (it will be ale, naturally, so no under 18′s please!)

To enter, please fill in the form here, with details of your nominee.

Go Commando with Hoofing Beer and Cider from Cotleigh

We’re pleased to be able to stock the great Commando Hoofing, lager and cider produced by Cotleigh Brewery.

Originally brewed to support the Royal Marines 40 Commando base in Taunton and to celebrate the units return from deployment in Afghanistan, this beer is now enjoying widespread acclaim.

A number of Royal Marines from Termoli Troop 40 Commando RM, tasted the beer and commented “It’s a great beer that has an explosion of flavours from hops to fresh fruit, far safer and far more palatable than ones we are used to. Hoofing is a Royal Marine slang term used to describe most things fantastic i.e Hoofing dancer. This beer is certainly that … Hoofing!”

Cotleigh are proud to support the Royal Marines Family and as such 5p from every pint sold goes to the charity Go Commando (Charity Number 1139194). Each bottle has the Braille message “Cotleigh Brewery Go Commando Hoofing” on back label in recognition of Marines suffering blindness from blast injuries.

The beer is described as “An explosion of flavours originating from cascade and Styrian hops. A refreshing pale golden beer with a fruit filled finish.”

Buy the Beer here, and the cider here.

October Newsletter : Nøgne Ø and more

Nøgne Ø

We’ve been able to secure a very limited amount of the excellent Nøgne Ø brewery range of beers from Norway. Nøgne Ø is Norway’s leading and largest supplier of bottle conditioned ale, and they produce some very special beers. The range available on our site includes their India Pale Ale, Saison, Wit, Imperial Stout and 500 Imperial IPA.

The name Nøgne Ø means “naked island”, a poetic term used by Henrik Ibsen to describe any of the countless stark, barren outcroppings that are visible in the rough sea off Norway’s southern coast. We think the name also gives a symbolic picture of what the two Norwegian home brewers did in early 2002, when they decided to found a new brewery. Their urge to share their passion for good beer was unbearable. Their vision was to bring diversity and innovation into commercial brewing of real ale. The result – Nøgne Ø.

Nøgne Ø’s subtitle – “The Uncompromising Brewery” – is a plain statement of their mission to craft ale of highest quality, personality and individuality. The alchemists realised that they could only create gold from gold – so have Nøgne. Their gold is Maris Otter; Cascade, Centenneal, Chinook and Columbus. They think Maris Otter is the best malt obtainable, hand malted barley in the traditional manner in the UK. The big C’s are full flavoured hops, grown in the USA. They only use ingredients of highest quality in order to make beers of uncompromising quality.

We only have a small amount of each beer – so get in quick to avoid disappointment. Buy Nøgne Ø beers here.

New Windsor and Eton Beers

We have two new beers from the Windsor and Eton brewery joining the ranks of the very popular Guardsman, Conqueror and Knight of the Garter; Republika and Conqueror 1075.

Republika (4.8% ABV)

Republika (4.8%) is Windsor and Eton’s first lager. It’s made with the same passion and creativity that they put into their ales.  Using Saaz hops and Czech pilsner yeast and malt, they ferment for 2 weeks before ‘lagering’ for a further 6 weeks. The result is a refreshing, full flavoured pilsner lager with a balanced, rounded taste.

Conqueror 1075 (7.4% ABV)

With an original gravity of 1075 this is a stronger special edition of Conqueror not for the faint hearted. Conqueror 1075 (7.4%) is a rich and complex innovative black IPA brewed from a unique blend of five speciality malts along with Cascade and Pacific Jade whole leaf hops.

You can buy these beers from our store here.

Twitter Beer Festival

Our next Twitter Beer Festival will take place on the nights of 14th and 15th October 2011.

The idea is simple. Order our beer festival mixed case, and keep it safe until either the 14th or 15th October. From 8pm each evening we will start tasting the beers, and tweeting our thoughts. And we’d like you to do the same. Simply follow the hashtag #VBF and make sure you use that hashtag when you tweet yourself so others can see you too. And don’t forget to follow us on @alesbymail.

We will be selling these as 6 bottle, 12 bottle and 24 bottle packs so you can take part individually or with a group of friends. The first Twitter Beer Festival was a great success, and we’re sure this one will be too.

You can find out more about the Twitter Beer Festival here.

October Special Offer Cases

The elves are clearing space in the warehouse prior to the Christmas stock coming in, so they have put together some great special offer mixed cases including beers from Nobby’s, WIndsor and Eton, Kelham Island, Meantime, Pitfield, Hoggleys, Stringers and many more!

These beers have a short date on them, so should really be drunk by November/December. But in our experience they will still taste fine many months after their “best before” date.

We have three special offer cases available, great beers at a great price of £20 for 12 bottles – click here to find out more.
